CapCut and DaVinci Resolve are both free video editors in 2026. But they're built for completely different users. After using both for 6+ months, here's which free editor wins for which project.
For short-form content and beginners: CapCut (free). For professional editing and color grading: DaVinci Resolve (free). CapCut gets you from recording to published in 5 minutes. Resolve gives you Hollywood-grade tools at no cost. I use CapCut for daily Shorts. I would learn Resolve for client video work.
CapCut takes 30 minutes to learn. DaVinci Resolve takes weeks to be productive. CapCut has simple drag-and-drop, templates, and one-click effects. Resolve has a full nonlinear editor, node-based color grading, and Fusion for VFX. For someone who wants to make a video today, CapCut. For someone who wants to become a professional editor, Resolve is the investment. I use CapCut because I value speed. I would learn Resolve if editing became my main work.
CapCut was built for TikTok and Shorts. The templates, text overlays, transitions, and music library are all optimized for 15-60 second vertical videos. Resolve can edit vertical video, but it's not optimized for it. For short-form creators, CapCut is the better tool. For long-form projects (10+ minutes), Resolve's timeline editing is better.
Resolve has industry-standard color grading, audio mixing, and visual effects. CapCut has basic versions of these. For any project where the final product needs to look professional (client work, YouTube, film), Resolve is the tool. For casual content where good enough is fine, CapCut is sufficient. I use CapCut because my content doesn't need color grading. I would switch to Resolve if I started doing client work.
CapCut is free (with optional Pro at $9.99/mo). DaVinci Resolve is free (with optional Studio at $295 one-time). Both are remarkably good for free tools. CapCut gives you ease. Resolve gives you power. The free tiers are genuinely good enough for most creators.
Pick CapCut if you make short-form content and value speed. Pick DaVinci Resolve if you want to learn professional editing or do client work. I use CapCut for daily Shorts. I keep Resolve installed for the rare times I need to color grade or do complex audio work. For most creators, CapCut is the right starting point. Graduate to Resolve when you outgrow it.
