Slack and Microsoft Teams are the top two team communication tools in 2026. Slack is the independent chat-first platform. Teams is the Microsoft-integrated collaboration hub. After using both across different companies, here's which one fits which team.
For chat-first, fast, independent teams: Slack ($0-7.25/user/mo). For Microsoft 365 integrated, video-first organizations: Microsoft Teams (free with M365). Slack is a better chat tool. Teams is a better meeting and integration tool. I use Slack with small tech teams. I've used Teams at large enterprises. The right choice depends on your company's existing stack.
Slack's chat is faster, more intuitive, and more fun. Channels, threads, reactions, custom emoji, and a rich API for bots and integrations. Teams' chat is functional but clunky. Messages take longer to load, threads are confusing, and the UI feels heavier. For teams that communicate primarily through text, Slack is the better experience. I prefer Slack for daily communication. I tolerate Teams when the company mandates it.
Teams has better video conferencing, screen sharing, and meeting features. It's built on the same infrastructure as Skype. Slack's video calling (Huddles) is adequate for quick calls but not for formal meetings. For organizations that do many scheduled video meetings, Teams is the better platform. I use Slack for chat. I often end up using Zoom or Google Meet for video alongside Slack.
Slack integrates with 2,400+ apps and has a rich API for custom bots. Teams integrates deeply with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive) but has a smaller third-party ecosystem. If your company uses Microsoft 365, Teams' integration saves real time. If your company uses a mix of tools, Slack's broader integrations are better. I use Slack with Google Workspace companies. I use Teams with Microsoft companies.
Pick Slack if your team is small to medium, chat-heavy, and uses a variety of tools. Pick Teams if your company already uses Microsoft 365. I choose Slack whenever I have the choice because the chat experience is better. But if a company already pays for Microsoft 365, Teams is the practical choice.
