Review of Inflection AI (Pi)
Inflection AI was founded in 2022 by Reid Hoffman, Mustafa Suleyman, and Karén Simonyan. They raised $1.5B and built Pi, an AI chatbot famous for empathy and emotional intelligence. In March 2024, Microsoft hired most of the team, and Inflection pivoted to enterprise AI (Inflection-3). The consumer Pi product is now sunsetted.
Pi was genuinely empathetic. Before it shut down, Pi was the most emotionally intelligent chatbot. It remembered personal details, asked about your day, and never felt transactional.
Voice was exceptional. The voice mode was natural, warm, and conversational. The best voice AI for personal use.
Safety focus was strong. Pi was designed to be helpful, harmless, and honest. Less prone to manipulation than competitors.
Enterprise pivot has potential. Inflection-3 is now powering enterprise customers through partnerships. The technology is strong, even if the consumer product is gone.
Pi is no longer available. As of late 2024, the consumer Pi product is sunsetted. You can't chat with Pi anymore.
No consumer product. Inflection is now B2B. Individual users have no way to access the technology directly.
Smaller brand than OpenAI or Anthropic. Even before the pivot, Inflection was less well-known. The Microsoft deal further reduced public mindshare.
Limited API availability. Inflection-3 is available to enterprise customers, but there's no public API for individual developers.
Pi (consumer): discontinued. Inflection-3 (enterprise): custom pricing. No public pricing or API.
Enterprise customers needing empathetic AI for customer service or internal tools. Individual users: no longer applicable.
★ 3.5/5. The empathetic chatbot is gone. The enterprise pivot is interesting but not accessible to most users. A sad end to a great product.
