What is Replit?

Replit is a browser-based IDE that supports 50+ programming languages. It includes a code editor, runtime, package manager, database, and deployment — all in one tab. Founded in 2016, it has 30M+ users, mostly students and indie developers.

What we like

Zero setup. Open a browser tab, start coding. No installs, no environment configuration. Perfect for learning and quick prototypes.

Multiplayer is great. Multiple people can edit the same code in real-time, like Google Docs. Great for pair programming, code reviews, and teaching.

Built-in hosting. Deploy a web app with one click. Custom domains on paid plans. The full pipeline from code to live URL takes minutes.

Replit Agent. The new Agent can build full apps from a prompt. We tested it on simple apps and it works surprisingly well.

Mobile app is usable. The iOS and Android apps let you code on the go. Not for production work, but great for quick edits.

What we don't like

Performance is inconsistent. Simple projects are fast. Large projects with many files can be slow. The browser-based runtime has limits.

Limited control over the environment. You can't install system packages freely. The sandbox restricts what you can do.

Pricing is high for serious use. The free tier has limited compute. The Core plan is $25/month for serious projects. The Hacker plan is needed for private projects.

Always-hosted apps can be expensive. Always-On deployments cost $0.20-$0.80/day per Repl. A 24/7 app can cost $60-240/month.

Pricing

Free: limited compute, public only. Starter: $7/month for private projects. Core: $25/month with more compute. Pro: $40/month for teams. Enterprise: custom.

Who is it for?

Students learning to code, indie developers prototyping, teams that need quick collaboration. Not for production engineering teams.

Verdict

★ 4/5. The best browser-based IDE. Great for learning and prototyping. The free tier is genuinely useful.
