Review of Windsurf
Windsurf is an AI-native IDE built by Codeium. It's a fork of VS Code with deep AI integration: tab completion, inline editing, a multi-file 'Cascade' agent, and terminal commands. The Cascade agent can plan, edit files, and run commands autonomously. Pricing: Free tier, $15/month Pro, $30/month Teams.
Both are AI-native VS Code forks. Cursor has the best tab completion and the most polished UI. Windsurf has a more capable agent (Cascade) and a much better free tier. Cursor Pro is $20/month with limits; Windsurf Pro is $15/month with more usage. For pure tab completion, Cursor wins. For agent-style work, Windsurf wins.
Cascade is Windsurf's killer feature. It can read your entire repo, plan a multi-step change, edit multiple files, and run terminal commands. You give it a high-level goal ('add Stripe subscription to my SaaS') and it does the work, asking for confirmation at key steps. This is the most capable coding agent we've used.
Windsurf's tab completion is good but not as good as Cursor's. It predicts single-line completions well, but Cursor's multi-line and cross-file predictions are still the gold standard. If tab completion is your top priority, pick Cursor.
Windsurf's inline edit is excellent. You select code, hit Cmd+I, and tell it what to change. It can refactor, add error handling, or rewrite a function. The output is fast and accurate. Comparable to Cursor's inline edit.
Windsurf's free tier is generous: unlimited tab completions, 25 Cascade messages/month, 5 premium model messages/day. Cursor's free tier is much more limited (2,000 completions + 50 slow requests). For casual users, Windsurf is the better free pick.
Windsurf supports Claude 4, GPT-5, Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Codeium's own models. The free tier includes Codeium's models; paid tiers add access to Claude and GPT-5. Cursor supports the same models. Both have strong model selection.
Windsurf is fast. Cascade can scaffold a new feature in 30-60 seconds. Tab completions appear in 200-400ms. The IDE itself is snappy, with no noticeable lag. Cursor is similarly fast, but Windsurf feels slightly snappier on big repos.
Windsurf does not train on your code by default, on any tier. Cursor's free tier trains on your code; Pro and Business have privacy mode. For privacy-conscious teams, Windsurf wins out of the box.
Free: unlimited tab, 25 Cascade, 5 premium. Pro: $15/month, unlimited Cascade (with fair use), unlimited premium. Teams: $30/month per user, collaboration, admin. Cursor: $20/month Pro, $40/month Business. Windsurf is cheaper.
Devs who want a free, capable AI IDE with a strong agent. Teams that care about privacy. Anyone who finds Cursor too expensive. If you can live with slightly worse tab completion, Windsurf is the better value.
Devs who want the best tab completion and the most polished UI. Teams that have already standardized on Cursor. Anyone who values aesthetics over price.
Windsurf is the best free AI IDE in 2026, and a strong Cursor competitor at $15/month. The Cascade agent is more capable than Cursor's Composer for autonomous, multi-step work. For most devs, Windsurf is the better value. For Cursor fanatics, stick with Cursor.
