Review of Gemini 2 Pro
Gemini 2 Pro is Google's flagship AI model, released in late 2025. It comes in three sizes: Flash (fast/cheap), Pro (balanced), and Ultra (premium). The 2M token context window is the largest of any major model. The Google Workspace integration is the killer feature for productivity.
The 2M context window is unique. You can paste entire codebases, books, or video transcripts. Gemini handles them without losing track. No other major model comes close.
Google Workspace integration is seamless. Gemini lives inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. You can ask it to summarize emails, draft documents, or analyze spreadsheets without leaving the apps you use.
Multimodal is first-class. Gemini can read text, images, video, and audio. You can upload a 1-hour video and ask questions about it. The integration is much better than Claude or GPT-5.
Research is excellent. Google Search integration means Gemini always has up-to-date information. It's the best model for current events and fact-checking.
Free tier is generous. The Gemini app gives you access to Gemini 2 Pro for free, with limits. Pro plan is $20/month for higher limits.
Reasoning still trails Claude. Gemini 2 Pro is smart, but Claude Opus 4.8 still wins on nuanced reasoning and complex coding. Gemini is more 'helpful' than 'thoughtful'.
Tool use is less reliable. Function calling and tool use work, but with more errors than GPT-5 or Claude. You need to validate outputs more carefully.
Privacy concerns. Google uses Gemini conversations for training by default. The Workspace integration means your emails and docs can be analyzed.
Limited availability outside Google. Gemini 2 Pro is most useful inside Google's ecosystem. Outside of it, the model is just another API option.
Free: limited Gemini 2 Pro. Pro: $20/month with higher limits. Ultra: $250/month for the most powerful model. API: $1.25/M input, $5/M output (Pro).
Google Workspace users, researchers, anyone working with very long documents. The default choice if you live in Gmail and Docs.
★ 4.5/5. The best AI for Google users and long documents. Claude is still better for hard reasoning.
